Q: When should a child be seen by a dentist for the first time?

A: Our office, as well as the The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommend that your child’s first dental visit should be scheduled by one year of age. Children who have established a dental home at an early age are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care.

The purpose of the first visit is to introduce you and your child to the dental office. Emphasis is placed on the developmental assessment of your child’s oral health. Caries (tooth decay /cavities) or developmental disturbances can be managed early. Fluoride varnish may be applied to counteract beginning decay on newly erupting teeth.

Q: My child may be nervous. How can I help?

A: It is quite normal for your child to be anxious about their first visit to the dentist. Pediatric dentists have special training in helping children feel secure during treatment. Our caring team at Pediatric Dentistry East strives to make sure that you and your child have a pleasant and fun experience with us!

We ask that parents not make a big deal out of the visit and refrain from using words that might cause unnecessary fear, such as “needle”, “shot”, “pull”, “drill” or “hurt”. We are experienced in dealing with children with anxiety and can explain treatment procedures in a positive and pleasant manner to avoid any anxious or negative feelings toward dentistry.

Q: What should I bring on my first visit?

A: Please bring your insurance card and a valid driver’s license. Our office uses electronic paper work that you can complete at your first visit.

Q: Do you accept insurance?

A: We accept all insurance plans and as a courtesy, we will submit your insurance claim for you. The portion of your child’s treatment that is not covered by your insurance company is your responsibility and is due at the time of service. Please remember that your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance company and that you are ultimately responsible for payment. We strive to estimate what your portion will be at the time that treatment is rendered, but please understand that this is only an estimate. This means that after your insurance has paid, you may be required to pay an additional payment or you may receive a refund. Regrettably, we do not dictate insurance policies. We will make every effort to help you understand what your coverage’s are.
